st. Leo's catholic college kendo demonstration
St. Leo's Catholic College in Wahroonga invited Reishinkan Kendojo to demonstrate Kendo and share our culture with their Year Eight Japanese Class students.
After a brief introduction to Kendo, Usami sensei led us through Kihon exercises, followed by Shiai matches. We were all treated to an impromptu Shiai demonstration between Usami sensei and Naginata exponent Alastair Holloway. Upon conclusion of the demonstration, enthusiastic students and teachers took to the floor and had a play with shinais making Men, Kote and Do uchi. Our volunteer motodachi have bruises to commemorate the occasion.
Although this Kendo demonstration was performed under the Reishinkan Kendojo banner, the success was made possible by the very generous efforts especially from Alastair Holloway from Sydney Kendo Club, Stella sensei and Joyce Chia from Singapore Kendo Club who were in Sydney on holidays, and Shindo sensei who spent twelve hours travelling to join us.
A special thank you to both Julia and Kate for their kind hospitality and who ensured we had a good environment in which to perform the demonstration.
